One of My Biggest Hurdles….. One of my biggest issues when seeing potential new clients is that they want (and oh so need) a personal budgeting service. That’s why they made the appointment, right? They want all of those positive feelings and for the financial stress, anxiety and sleepless nights to go away... But most of all, they want the results - but they don’t want to, or should I say “can’t”, pay for it.
Or in most cases, they perceive that they “cannot afford it”.
Yet I also wonder to myself if they thought that I would just take them on and give them our services for free? There is a lot to be said for the fact that if you actually PAY for a service, then you VALUE it way more than if you received it for FREE. They are more likely to stick to it too and thus get the desired results.
Here is what I mean Would you have a Plumber come around to fix a leaky tap and prevent a potential flood – only to say to them... “Oh, but I can’t pay for it"?
You are paying for someone to fix the tap – because you can’t fix the tap yourself – because you don’t have the expertise or qualifications. If the tap wasn’t fixed sooner, rather than later, then the results would be disastrous.
You are paying for the result. You are paying for someone else to deliver a service that you are not good at, or qualified in, so you get the experts in. That expert may only be there an hour or even 10 mins – but how long would it have taken you, and more importantly, how much damage would have been caused if you didn’t call in an expert?
Here is another one….. Would you sign up to Weightwatchers, get all the support, the menu plans, the tips and tricks, attend the meetings - and then say “Oh, but I don’t want to pay you for it"?
You are paying for a professional weight loss business to help you with your weight loss – because you can’t do it all by yourself (and that is completely fine, by the way). If you didn’t sign up for Weightwatchers, then the results could be disastrous – and you might continue to put more weight on leading to potential heart attacks, diabetes, depression and more...
You are paying for the results – in this case, the weight loss. You are paying to receive a service that you are not good at, or qualified in, so you get the experts in because they know what they are talking about.
And finally….
When your car breaks down and you take it to a mechanic who only takes an hour to fix it, would you let him/her get you back on the road again - and then say “Oh, but I can’t pay you for it”…….?
You are paying for someone to fix the car – because you can’t fix the car yourself. If the car wasn’t fixed promptly, then the future costs could be disastrous such as the brakes failing and a massive car accident occurs.
You are paying for the result. You are paying for a service that you are not good at, or qualified in, so you get the experts in.
It is exactly the same with your budgeting – no good at it? Get the experts in!
What Business Shares Their Expertise for Free...
Do you ever hear of anyone receiving a professional service that benefits them greatly and that they didn’t have to pay for it? What you are paying for is the ability for that expert to help you. To solve the problem. To get you the results that you need in your life. To support you when you need it. To help you live a better, happier, easier life.
With personal budgeting help, there is a certain expectation that you should be able to do it yourself, but 9 times out of 10, you can’t. People are often embarrassed or ashamed because they cannot manage their own finances….
I make no secret of the fact that I cannot lose weight by myself. I am just not to be trusted in the slightest – so I call in the experts. I pay for that expertise. I do not expect it for free. Now then! I know full well what to do to lose weight. I know what to eat and what not to eat to lose weight….. but if I have someone helping me, guiding me, supporting me, often doing some of the hard work for me (menu plans, etc), then I am more likely to stick to it – and thus lose the weight.
Accountability. Really does work. Having that someone there to remind you why you are doing it. Reminding you of the goals you can achieve, telling you how close you are to that goal, and getting excited alongside you, is priceless! Teamwork rocks! And you need that support too with your budget.
